The music biz

Greg, here, giving into the future and blogging on my macbook. I have definitely resisted spending too much time on the computer in the past, but it looks like that is changing for me now. It has been a few years since we were touring around playing gigs at bars, coffee houses, restaurants and the occasional house concert or concert.

Life and the music business have changed. People definitely seem to go out to see live music less than they used to, in general. I have to include myself in that category as well. It is becoming kinda rare to have an out of town band or musician pass through our neck of the woods the way they used to a few years ago. We used to work doing live sound here in MT sometimes as much as 4 times a week in the “good old days.” I do hope people start to remember how important it is to get out and experience real, live music played by real musicians again, even if they aren’t well known. People still pack the bars for music some nights, but it seems there are a lot of nights where there is a band and it is totally dead. There was a band from Reno at the Northern this week that was supposedly pretty good and nobody there to see them.

Until they do, it is bittersweet, but I am happy to say that there are a ton of opportunities awaiting the music creators of the world licensing music to film, tv, video games, ringtones, youtube videos and I’m still not sure how I feel about it, but commercials as well.

I’ll write more about it as I delve into it more deeply, but there are a bunch of music libraries out there that I am currently researching and submitting to. I really like this site for learning more if anybody else out there in cyberland is reading this and curious about it. http://www.musiclibraryreport.com/

Record an album in 28 days

I just signed up for the rpm challenge. The Goal- to make an album in the month of February, from start to finish.

Two things you should know-

  1. I have hard time keeping goals with a definite time stamp.
  2. I haven’t ever written an entire song.

But why let that keep me from it? For years of being on the technical side of the recording process I think I can pull this off. I have had this fear that when I do go into the studio I’d become this crazy mess of ungraspable  ideas. And that it’d take years to attain what I set out to capture. So this project will help me out with the timeline. And about writing an entire song…

I know Greg Grant is also going to sign up, so we will have a bunch of new songs, behind the scenes videos and blog posts about the process.

So here is to the success of completing !!
